Personal Background
- Toby is in his 40's [1.1 script only]. In May of 2002, he is 44 [3.19]. Toby was born on December 23, 1954 [4.11].
- Along with many other people who know him, Toby's own mother calls him a pain in the ass [1.4]. It's okay, though, because Toby has cultivated his reputation as a pain in the ass [1.19].
- Though he is divorced from Representative Andrea Wyatt, Toby still wears his wedding ring [1.20]. In a last-ditch attempt to convince Andy to remarry him, Toby buys her dream house, blindfolds her, and brings her there to propose in what Josh calls a bold, romantic gesture. Andy is touched, but refuses to remarry him because he's too sad for her [4.22].
- After Andy explains her reasoning, Toby worries that she felt that way when they were married, and wonders whether his friends think he's too sad [4.22].
- Toby and Andy were trying to have children when Jed Bartlet took office, but were unsuccessful. Toby loves kids and wants kids, but would be okay if he couldn't have kids [4.5]. Andy is pregnant (with twins -- a boy and a girl), and Toby thinks they should name the kids Beatrice and Bluto [4.6]. Andy and Toby both like Sophie for girls, and maybe Rebecca, but Toby also likes Millicent. And they're nowhere with boys' names [4.18].
- When the twins are born on May 7, 2003, Andy chooses the name Huck for the boy, Toby for which disclaims any blame. They both agree to name their daughter Molly after the Secret Service Agent who died during Zoey Bartlet's abduction; Toby tells his newborn daughter that she's named for an incredibly brave young woman not that much older than the baby [4.23].
- Huck's bris was performed on the morning of July 4th, despite the fact that it is traditionally performed on the 8th day after birth, and Huck and Molly were born on May 7th [5.3].
- Toby was quite relieved to see from the ultrasound that his kids have heads [4.7]. Despite his fear that he wouldn't love his kids enough, Toby realized that if someone were hurting them, he'd drop napalm on Yellowstone to make them stop [4.23].
- While in Orange County stumping for Sam's campaign, a drunken barfly starts hassling Andy for being a bad role model, prompting Toby to get in between the two and tell the drunk to step back. When the man complies, he slips and falls, and his friend lunges at Toby and is punched by Charlie. Both Toby and Charlie end up arrested for assault [4.16]. The detailed bail form required ten signatures and four initials; Toby thought he might be buying somebody's house. While awaiting the return of his property, Toby borrowed a call girl's cellphone to call Air Force One [4.17].
- Toby has a brother, David Ziegler -- a scientist and astronaut -- from whom Toby seems to be somewhat estranged [1.22].
- Both CJ's and Toby's fathers were children of immigrants, and they both needed the GI Bill [3.12].
- Toby's mother has been dead for twelve years [3.10].
- Toby's father, Julie, was a mobster in Brooklyn Heights who is estranged from Toby, though not from Toby's siblings. Josh got Julie into the West Wing just before Christmas, 2002, to attempt a reconciliation. Toby's not fully on board with that yet [4.11].
- Toby's grandfather lived to be 96, but the last twenty years, he thought the Habsburgs still lived in a palace in Vienna [5.7].
- His sisters used to take him to protests in 1968 [2.16]. Toby's draft number was 125; they got up to 90 that year [4.19].
- Toby is Jewish [1.1] and on Saturday mornings, he attends a temple on Delaware, where Rabbi Glassman leads the services [1.14].
- He is from Brooklyn, New York [2.3] -- specifically from Brighton Beach [4.2] -- and remains an avid Yankees fan [1.20]. In fact, he's seen 441 games at Yankee Stadium [3.22].
- His middle name is Zachary [3.3].
